Istanbul, August 1, 2025 (LANA) - A tripartite summit kicked off in Istanbul, Turkey, on Friday, bringing together Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The summit discussed regional cooperation, stability, and economic integration in the Mediterranean region.
The summit addressed prospects for economic cooperation between the three countries, emphasizing the importance of strengthening partnerships in the fields of energy, oil and gas, infrastructure, and linking Libya to regional projects in the Mediterranean. It also discussed investment in ports, developing electricity grids, and supporting joint strategic projects within the framework of development integration that serves the interests of the people and provides new opportunities for growth.
In his speech, Dabaiba emphasized that Libya is keen to consolidate effective partnerships based on balance and mutual respect, and that it is working to restore its regional role as an effective and reliable partner. He explained that this endeavor reflects the improvement in the political and security situation in the country.
Dabaiba reviewed the efforts made by the Government of National Unity in combating smuggling networks and illegal activities.
The Prime Minister also presented a comprehensive vision for enhancing regional coordination in this area, calling for a quadripartite ministerial meeting comprising Libya, Turkey, Italy, and Qatar, with the aim of implementing joint projects and unifying efforts on priority issues.
Dabaiba noted that the State of Qatar has expressed its willingness to participate in the areas of logistical, humanitarian, and technical support.
In his speech, the Prime Minister addressed the large-scale security operation recently launched by the government in the capital, Tripoli, and several other areas, noting that the campaign aims to end the influence of outlaw armed groups involved in blackmailing state institutions and interfering in their sovereign affairs.
He emphasized that this operation reflects a clear political and security choice to restore the state's prestige and build institutions that operate within the framework of the law, free from tutelage or threat.
He considered dismantling these parallel structures a crucial step toward ending the influence of gangs and enabling the state to extend its authority over its institutions and facilities. This, he said, would pave the way for implementing national policies on various issues, particularly migration and border issues.
Concluding his remarks, Dabaiba emphasized that the Government of National Unity is now in a stronger political and field position, and that it has become capable of playing a balanced and responsible regional role. He noted that the tripartite summit represents clear political support for the sovereign path pursued by the Libyan state and is a confirmation of the growing international recognition of its efforts to consolidate stability and cooperation in the Mediterranean basin.
