UN Mission: The 6+6 and Advisory Committees approve a political settlement
Pulbished on:
Tripoli, August 01, 2025 (LANA) – The 6+6 and Advisory Committees agreed on the need to amend the Libyan constitutional and legal framework to facilitate the holding of presidential and parliamentary elections with widely acceptable results.
This came at the conclusion of a two-day consultative meeting between the two committees, sponsored by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). This meeting is part of the Mission's ongoing consultations with various Libyan stakeholders, ahead of the expected announcement of the political roadmap during the next Security Council briefing.
According to a publication by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), the members of the 6+6 Committee commended the Advisory Committee's recommendations issued on May 5 and committed to incorporating them into efforts to make electoral laws more enforceable.
The Mission stated that the two committees recognized that a comprehensive political settlement is critical to paving the way for elections. This settlement requires amending the Constitutional Declaration, reviewing electoral laws to ensure the integrity of elections, forming a unified government with a clear and time-bound electoral mandate, and adopting domestic and international guarantees to rebuild trust among all, especially between the people and political institutions. The two committees emphasized that the political settlement must also include measures to strengthen local governance, ensure electoral security, advance national reconciliation, and enhance spending transparency while combating corruption.
