Tripoli, July 28, 2025 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) congratulated the new Presidency of the State Council, expressing its hope for constructive engagement from all Council members to break the political deadlock, advance the political process, and end the protracted transitional phases.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Mission announced that, following the live broadcast of the High Council of State session yesterday, Sunday, where 95 members elected a new Presidency Bureau, it noted that the voting took place in normal and transparent conditions.
According to the statement, it believes that the attendance of two-thirds of the Council members at yesterday's session reflects a broad consensus among members to overcome the division that has hindered the Council's ability to carry out its responsibilities over the past year. It supports calls to expand the scope of this internal consensus by including members who did not attend the session.
The mission said it expects the High Council of State to perform its duties responsibly, as outlined in the Libyan Political Agreement, in line with its independent political role and the aspirations of Libyans to end the institutional divide, restore legitimacy through elections, and contribute to necessary reforms. It also encourages the Council members to fulfill their national duties and live up to the expectations of the Libyan people by supporting a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process, facilitated by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
