Tarhona youth criticize the division.

Tripoli, July 24, 2025 (LANA) – A team from the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) held a dialogue meeting with 16 young people from the city of Tarhona yesterday, Wednesday, to hear their views on ways to break the political stalemate in the country.

The UN mission reported, in a post on its official Facebook page on Thursday, that the participating youth expressed their dissatisfaction with the institutional division in Libya, believing it has marginalized them and deprived them of opportunities for support and active participation in public life.

A number of participants criticized the mission for what they described as "its engagement with parties that do not enjoy popular legitimacy," calling for a review of the dialogue methodology and ensuring broader representation of youth and community forces, according to the mission.

According to the mission, the proposals put forward by Tarhona's youth during the discussion varied. Some called for the formation of an inclusive national assembly representing the various segments of Libyan society, while others demanded immediate elections to end the transitional phases. However, a large number of participants emphasized the priority of adopting a consensus constitution before heading to the polls, referring to the so-called "third option" proposed by the mission's advisory committee.

The attendees also emphasized the need to enhance youth participation in national institutions and proposed organizing an annual national forum to regularly monitor the priorities and aspirations of Libyan youth.

The participants expressed their full support for the three tracks emerging from the Berlin Conference, particularly the tracks on politics, human rights, and security and the economy, emphasizing the importance of inclusiveness and listening to the voices of youth as partners in building Libya's future.
