Tripoli, July 18, 2025 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) renewed its call for a full, independent, and transparent investigation into the disappearance of House of Representatives member Siham Sergiwa and for those responsible to be held accountable. This came in a statement issued by the mission, which began by saying, "Yesterday marked six years since the disappearance of House of Representatives member Siham Sergiwa, after armed men stormed her home in Benghazi and took her to an unknown location. Her fate remains unknown, and no party has been held accountable for her disappearance."
The statement added, "Many other individuals have disappeared across the country, including House of Representatives member Ibrahim al-Darsi, who has been missing since May 2024. No serious investigation into his disappearance has yet emerged. Recent discoveries of mass grave sites in Tripoli highlight the systematic nature and scope of these violations."
The statement indicated that a number of individuals who had disappeared in Tripoli were recently identified among the bodies found in facilities previously controlled by the Stabilization Support Apparatus and recently seized. It emphasized that the cases of enforced disappearance reflect the efforts of security agencies to silence dissenting voices across Libya.
In its statement, the mission expressed its solidarity with the vast number of victims of enforced disappearance. Forced detention and missing persons in the country, and calls on Libyan political and security leaders to put an immediate end to these practices, reminding all relevant authorities that arbitrary detention, abduction, torture, enforced disappearance, and death in custody constitute gross violations of human rights and may constitute international crimes subject to prosecution by the International Criminal Court. The Libyan authorities must ensure that these practices cease immediately and that those responsible are brought to justice.
