Tripoli, July 18, 2025 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) organized an online consultative session last Wednesday, with the participation of (57) male and female students from various Libyan universities, to hear the views of young people on the Advisory Committee's proposals regarding the future of the political process in the country.
During the discussion, which was attended by students from the municipalities of Tripoli Central, Abu Salim, Hay al-Andalus, Ain Zara, Qasr bin Ghashir, Zawiya, Sabratha, Gharyan, Zintan, Kabo, Al-Arban, Al-Khums, Sirte, Benghazi, Al-Bayda, Sabha, Bint Baya, and Murzuq, participants emphasized the importance of expediting the holding of comprehensive presidential and parliamentary elections, as an urgent necessity to achieve stability and consolidate legitimacy in the country.
Most participants unanimously favored the first proposal, which calls for holding presidential and parliamentary elections almost simultaneously, to avoid deepening the existing political division.
The students also emphasized the need to unify the divided military and sovereign institutions, considering this a vital step to prevent a recurrence of the political crisis. They expressed concern about the lack of trust, warning that widespread corruption represents a major obstacle to ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.
In the same context, several participants pointed to the marginalization of some cultural and social components in the Libyan political landscape, posing additional challenges to the conduct of inclusive and fair elections.
This session is part of the UNSMIL's efforts to listen to the voices of youth and enhance their participation in the political process, as part of its efforts to support Libya's transition towards stability and democracy.
