Nairobi, July 16, 2025 (LANA) – The Minister of Environment in the Government of National Unity, Dr. Ibrahim Al-Arabi Munir, assumed Libya's presidency of the African Ministers' Council of Environment (AMCEN) for the next two years during the opening of the 20th session of the Conference of African Ministers of Environment (CAMEN) in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. The ceremony was attended by environment ministers and representatives of African countries and regional and international organizations.

Libya will assume the presidency of the new session for the period 2025-2026, succeeding Ethiopia, which chaired the previous session. This represents an opportunity to strengthen African coordination in addressing common environmental challenges, particularly in the areas of climate change adaptation and sustainable management of natural resources.

In his opening remarks, the Libyan Minister of Environment and Chairman of the CAMEN emphasized the importance of unifying African efforts to address growing environmental challenges. He emphasized the commitment of African countries to move confidently towards a more sustainable and resilient future in the face of climate change.

During this session, the African group's preparations for participation in conferences and meetings were discussed, including the Climate Change Summit in Brazil, which will be held at the end of next October, the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, which will be held in Zimbabwe during the second half of 2025, and the Minamata Convention on Mercury Summit, which will be held in Geneva before the end of 2025.
