Tripoli, 16 July 2025 (Lana): The EU welcomed the removal of Ghadames Old Town from the UNESCO endangered sites list, considering it a significant step that reflects Libya's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage and promoting sustainable development.

Head of the EU Mission to Libya, Ambassador Nicola Orlando, said in a tweet, “Great news from Libya: Ghadames Old Town has been removed from the UNESCO endangered sites list—a testament to Libya’s dedication to preserving its cultural heritage.”

“The EU is proud to have supported this success through UNDP Libya’s solar lighting project, boosting tourism and the local economy while protecting the town’s unique character,” Orlando stated.

“We remain committed to working with Libyan partners to safeguard the country’s rich heritage—a legacy for humanity and a driver of sustainable growth,” he added.

Ghadames is one of the oldest desert cities in North Africa and is known as the "Pearl of the Desert." It has been a World Heritage Site since 1986.
