Tripoli, 15 July 2025 (Lana) Special Representative of the Secretary-General Hanna Tetteh and his Deputy for Political Affairs, Stephanie Koury, met yesterday with 15 members of the Western Region Movement, including the mayors of Ain Zara, Jmail-Manshiyah, Suq al-Jumoa, Surman, Central Zawiyah, and Zuwara, to hear their views on the Advisory Committee’s work and the best way to break the political deadlock.
According to the mission, the participants provided proposals to inform a consensual roadmap, stressing the urgent need to unify the military and security institutions, led by a unified Libyan government exercising effective control across Libya.
Participants also shared their concerns about the proliferation of weapons and military build-up, emphasizing the risks it posed to civilian lives. Representing 143 mukhtars across 11 western municipalities, a community leader conveyed their absolute wish for peace, urging all concerned parties to resort to dialogue to resolve conflict.
Tetteh assured the group of UNSMIL’s commitment to continue supporting de-escalation efforts to prevent the outbreak of violence and to develop a consensual roadmap toward elections and unified institutions.
