Rome, July 11, 2025 (LANA) – The Libyan Embassy in Italy organized a humanitarian visit for a number of families of Libyan detainees to the city of Palermo, enabling them to meet their relatives in Italian detention centers.
The embassy explained in a statement that it supervised the organization of this visit, in direct coordination with the relevant Italian authorities, to ensure it was conducted under appropriate conditions that took into account the humanitarian and social dimensions of the detainees and their families.
According to the embassy, the families were accompanied on this visit by Counselor Ibrahim Balaou from the embassy's consular section and embassy employee Khaled Ambia, who facilitated the procedures and followed up on the details of the visit on the ground.
The embassy indicated that this initiative is part of the embassy's ongoing efforts to promote a humanitarian dimension in its handling of the conditions of Libyan detainees, and to affirm Libya's commitment to caring for its citizens abroad, protecting their rights, and strengthening family and social contacts in such circumstances.
The embassy reiterated its commitment to communicating with the Italian side regarding the adoption of the agreement on the transfer of persons sentenced to custodial sentences, signed between the two countries in Palermo on September 29, 2023, in preparation for its entry into force as soon as possible, enabling detainees to complete their sentences within Libyan territory.
