Benghazi, 7 July 2025 (Lana): Chairman of the Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Committee of the House of Representatives (HoR), Youssef Al-Aqouri, met yesterday with the French Ambassador to Libya, Mustafa Mihraje, on the occasion of the end of his term as his country's ambassador to Libya.
The meeting was held at the headquarters of the HoR in Benghazi, where Al-Aqouri expressed his deep appreciation for the efforts made by Ambassador Mihraje during his tenure, commending the constructive cooperation and mutual understanding that characterize Libyan-French relations on a number of bilateral and regional issues.
According to a press statement by the spokesman for the HoR, Abdullah Blihaq, the meeting discussed the latest developments in the political situation in Libya, including the formation of a unified government, the human rights situation, municipal elections, and the maritime border demarcation agreement with Turkey.
During the meeting, Al-Aqouri emphasized the importance of France's support for Libya's stability, stressing the need to continue constructive coordination between the two countries on various issues of common interest.
The chairman also discussed with the ambassador the most prominent challenges he faced during his tenure in Libya, his assessment of the level of bilateral cooperation, the future of the French technical program submitted to the HoR, and the role of the EU in supporting stability in Libya.
Regarding the migration issue, Al-Aqouri reiterated the firm position of the HoR that Libya cannot be a guardian of Europe's borders, noting the need to establish cooperation that respects Libyan sovereignty and serves the interests of the Libyan people.
He also affirmed Libya's firm position in receiving brothers from Sudan and treating them equally with Libyan citizens, noting that the political division has had a negative impact on the human rights situation, which requires further follow-up and attention from the HoR.
For his part, the ambassador expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome, emphasizing the strategic importance his country attaches to relations with Libya and wishing continued security and stability for the Libyan people.
