The UN mission calls for a transparent and independent investigation into the arbitrary detention of Al-Mariami

Tripoli, July 5, 2025 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expressed its deep shock and sadness at the death of activist Abdel Moneim Al-Mariami, calling for a transparent and independent investigation into his arbitrary detention, allegations of torture during his detention, and all the circumstances surrounding his death.

In a statement, the mission offered its condolences to his family and noted that Al-Mariami was abducted by the Internal Security Agency in Sorman on June 30 and referred to the Public Prosecutor's Office on July 3. He was pronounced dead on July 5 under circumstances that remain unclear.

The mission condemned the threats, harassment, and arbitrary arrests targeting politically active Libyans, reiterating its call for all authorities to respect freedom of expression and end unlawful arrests.
