Ankara, July 4, 2025 (LANA) – Türkiye affirmed that it will continue to develop cooperation with Libya on maritime issues within the framework of the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries.
This came in response to a source in the Turkish Ministry of Defense's questions regarding the final statement of the recent European Union leaders' summit, which criticized the memorandum of understanding between Türkiye and Libya on the delimitation of maritime jurisdiction areas.
The Turkish Anadolu Agency quoted the source as saying that the memorandum of understanding on maritime jurisdiction areas signed between Türkiye and Libya in 2019 was drafted to protect the rights of both countries within a framework of equity and respect for the rules of international maritime law.
The source indicated that both Türkiye and Libya had notified the United Nations of the memorandum of understanding at the time.
The source said, "We do not accept that our memorandum of understanding be described as illegal, as a result of unilateral political guidance from Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration."
The source pointed out that the memorandum of understanding signed with Libya was determined in accordance with the median line between the mainland and the principles of non-enclosure and equality.
