The UN mission affirms the legitimate right to peaceful demonstration.

Tripoli, June 27, 2025 (LANA) - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expressed its dismay at statements made by some Libyan political figures that appear not only to encourage demonstrations, but also to encourage demonstrators to commit illegal acts against UN personnel and property.

This came in a statement issued by the Mission on Friday, in which it affirmed its full and unconditional respect for the right of all citizens to demonstrate peacefully and express their opinions freely. It affirmed that direct communication with the Libyan people is a cornerstone of its work, and that it is always ready to meet, participate in dialogue, and listen to the views of Libyans, including the concerns and demands of peaceful demonstrators.

The Mission stated, "We have witnessed demonstrations outside our headquarters on several occasions, and we have always received petitions from demonstrators, as we have done in all previous protests, and we will continue to do so." Recently, the Mission noted that it received representatives of a number of demonstrators at its headquarters last Tuesday to listen to their demands and concerns, and that they were able to engage in an open discussion based on mutual respect.

The Mission noted that while it welcomes constructive criticism, the incitement and rumors being waged against it may be an indication of an attempt to undermine any progress towards launching a political process aimed at holding national elections and unifying institutions to achieve lasting peace and stability in Libya.

In the statement, the Mission reminded all parties of their commitment to maintaining the peaceful nature of any demonstration, refraining from engaging in any unlawful acts, and resolving disputes through constructive dialogue. It also reiterated its commitment to the 1946 Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations and the related agreement concluded between the United Nations and the Libyan authorities, which guarantees the inviolability of UN premises.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya concluded its statement by urging all parties to respect the sanctity of UN premises, personnel, property, and assets, in accordance with international law. The mission affirmed that it remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting a Libyan-led political process for the benefit of all Libyans and will continue to closely monitor all developments.
