Benghazi, 25 June 2025 (Lana): Benina International Airport received the first direct commercial flight from Rome yesterday, marking the official resumption of air travel between Benghazi and Rome after a 13-year hiatus.

The Libyan Development and Reconstruction Fund, on its official Facebook page, described the resumption as "one of the most notable achievements in the air transport between Libya and Europe," stressing that this step comes within the framework of a strategic plan overseen by the Fund.

Director General of the Fund, Belgassem Haftar, emphasized that the resumption of this air route represents "a qualitative shift that aims to rebuild Libya’s infrastructure and revive international partnerships."

He added that the launch of this route was not a coincidence but rather the result of a series of meetings with Italian officials and representatives of major Italian companies over the past period.

Belgassem stated that the resumption of this route represents an important gateway for the return of international companies to Libya and contributes directly to supporting comprehensive development efforts and advancing various economic and service sectors.

On board the inaugural flight were the Italian Consul, the head of the Italian Chamber of Commerce, and more than 100 representatives from major Italian firms, and they will participate in the Libyan-Italian Forum for Development and Reconstruction, set to be held in Benghazi with wide participation from businessmen and investors.
