Italy: Libya's stability is crucial to containing irregular migration flows.

Pulbished on:

Rome, 24 June 2025 (Lana) Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stressed that the stability of Libya and its neighboring countries is crucial in containing irregular migration flows and combating illegal trafficking across the Central Mediterranean.

During her remark before the Italian Chamber of Deputies on the occasion of the European Summit scheduled for next Thursday and Friday, Meloni explained that human trafficking networks exploit instability and fragility to fuel uncontrolled migration flows, in addition to forms of the illegal economy that directly threaten European security.

Regarding the Sahel region, Meloni warned that, in light of the continued decline of the European presence in recent years, Italy supports the need to adopt a flexible and pragmatic approach that takes into account our shared strategic interests and places them at the heart of our priorities.

For his part, Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani said that the EU must commit to helping Libya restore a minimum level of stability.

"The situation in Libya is worrying, and we have requested that this issue be included on the agenda for discussion, given that continued instability could lead, particularly in the Mediterranean region, to increased migration flows," Tajani added in remarks on the sidelines of a meeting of European foreign ministers, as reported by the Italian news agency AKI.
