Benghazi, June 22, 2025 (LANA) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Libyan government appointed by the House of Representatives summoned the Greek Consul General in Benghazi, Agapios Kalognoumis, on Sunday and handed him a memorandum of protest against the Greek authorities' announcement of granting exploration licenses in disputed maritime areas south of Tikrit Island.

The ministry said in a statement that the Greek consul was handed a verbal note containing an official protest against the Greek authorities' announcement of opening tenders for hydrocarbon exploration in disputed maritime areas south of Crete, which are part of Libya's exclusive economic zone.

The ministry affirmed its absolute rejection of any unilateral measures that would undermine Libya's sovereign rights, calling on the Greek side to clarify the reasons for these actions and return to the negotiating table to resolve this issue in accordance with international law and the principles of good neighborliness.

The ministry had previously issued a statement expressing its astonishment and condemnation of this Greek move, affirming Libya's adherence to its full rights in its maritime zones and its readiness to defend them by all legitimate means.
