Derna, June 21, 2025 (LANA) – Osama Hamad, the Prime Minister of the Libyan Government assigned by the House of Representatives, expressed his surprise at the announcement issued by the Republic of Greece on June 12, 2025, which issued an international invitation to submit bids for the granting of licenses for exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons in marine areas south of the island of Crete.
In a speech during his government meeting today, Saturday, in the city of Derna, Hamad said that part of these areas fall within the maritime zone within Libya's exclusive economic zone, and that Libya has the right to exploit this area and explore for resources therein, a fundamental right in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Hamad referred to the statement of his government's Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding Greece's actions, calling for the necessity of dialogue. Otherwise, Libya will be forced to bring in specialized companies willing to invest and grant them exploration licenses in these same marine areas.
On the same topic, Hamad stated in his speech that the agreement demarcating the borders in the exclusive economic zone with Turkey had been presented and referred to the House of Representatives for review and ratification.
He pointed out that a committee had been formed by decision of the Council of Ministers to review the demarcation of the maritime borders in Libya's exclusive economic zone in the Mediterranean Sea and to review all agreements and memoranda of understanding signed with friendly and sister countries since 2002, in accordance with the principles of international law and in line with Libya's interests, the principles of good neighborliness, and the maintenance of diplomatic relations with neighboring countries, especially Egypt, which, he said, has provided support to Libya on several occasions.
