Berlin, June 20, 2025 (LANA) – Libyans in Europe called on the international community to pressure the Libyan parties to end the state of division, unify institutions, and hold free and fair elections that guarantee genuine popular legitimacy.
This came during a protest in solidarity with the demands of the Libyan people, organized by Libyan communities in Europe on Friday morning in front of the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin. The protest coincided with the meetings of the Berlin III Conference on Libya.
In a statement received by the Libyan News Agency, the participants in the protest called on the Berlin Conference participants to find an international solution to the Libyan crisis and support popular demands to correct the political path and reach elections that would end all transitional phases that have contributed to the aggravation of the current political, security, and economic situation.
The statement also called on the meeting participants to approve the acceleration of local elections, the removal of political bodies, and the punishment of those obstructing them. They also adopted the recommendation of the Advisory Committee of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya in Article 4, and insisted on the evacuation of mercenaries and foreign forces from Libyan territory. The statement emphasized that the continuation of the current situation threatens the fate of millions of Libyans, which requires urgent action to halt the security and political deterioration in the country.
The statement addressed an appeal to the ambassadors and representatives of international organizations participating in the Berlin meeting on Libya, warning against the continued rule of the current institutions despite the expiration of their legal mandate in 2023 and their failure to implement the Geneva 2021 roadmap, including holding elections within two years and ensuring political neutrality.
The statement emphasized the legitimacy of freedom of expression and the right to demonstrate, respect for human rights, dignity, and safety, and the rejection of armed demonstrations, violence, and the use of weapons. It also held the authorities responsible for ensuring security, stability, and social peace, preserving Libyan resources and interests, ensuring that perpetrators do not escape accountability and punishment, and holding the government accountable for the violence in Tripoli.
According to the statement, participants in the protest will seek to establish the "Gathering of Libyan Communities Abroad" as a peaceful and public civil institution that will serve as a link between Libyans at home and abroad and the international community.
