Ministry of Foreign Affairs announces its objection.

Pulbished on:

Tripoli, June 19, 2025 (LANA) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Government of National Unity expressed its deep concern regarding the European Journal's report regarding the Greek authorities' announcement of an international call for bids to grant hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation permits in maritime areas south of Crete, some of which fall within the maritime zones disputed with the Libyan state.

The Ministry affirmed in a statement issued on Thursday that these steps constitute a clear violation of Libya's sovereign rights, and that it expresses its complete reservations and clear objection to any exploration or drilling activities in these areas without prior legal agreement that respects the rules of international law.

In this context, the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that Libya has always sought to make the Mediterranean basin a space for cooperation, peace, and shared development among all coastal states, and that unilateral solutions only lead to further tension and complexity.

The Ministry called on the Greek authorities to responsibly consider the depth of the historical relations between the two countries and to prioritize dialogue and constructive negotiation as the only option for reaching just and equitable solutions based on applicable international law and preserving the interests of all parties.
