Tetteh: Hate speech undermines peace and deepens divisions.

Tripoli, June 18, 2025 (LANA) - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya, Hannah Tetteh, stressed that hate speech undermines peace, deepens divisions, and has contributed to igniting conflicts on numerous occasions throughout history, given the political polarization and fragile security situation in Libya.

In a press statement today, Wednesday, on the occasion of the International Day for Combating Hate Speech, Tetteh said that hate speech, especially when practiced along regional, tribal, or ethnic lines, is a real threat to efforts to unify the country and achieve stability.

She added that combating hate speech requires commitment at all levels, from state institutions, social actors, media professionals, digital platforms, civil society, and all citizens. She called for replacing inflammatory rhetoric with one based on inclusiveness, respect, and aspiration for the future.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) affirmed its commitment to working with all Libyans to promote dialogue, support reconciliation, and encourage responsible public discourse.

The head of the UN mission called for the use of modern technologies, including artificial intelligence, to build peace, not to divide societies or spread misinformation and hatred.

Tetteh also called for emphasizing shared responsibility, standing up against hatred, promoting respect for all differences, and working to advance Libya on the foundations of unity, justice, and lasting peace.
