UNSMIL launches a public consultation.

Pulbished on:

Tripoli, June 18, 2025 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) announced the launch of a public consultation aimed at gathering Libyans' views on the proposals of the Advisory Committee, which it formed to advance the country toward holding elections and unifying state institutions.

In a post on its official page, on Facebook, the mission called on all Libyans to participate in this consultation, which it described as an important opportunity to unify visions and positions to build a better future for Libya.

The Advisory Committee, which comprises 20 Libyan figures with political, constitutional, legal, and electoral expertise, submitted its final report on May 5, including recommendations aimed at addressing the contentious issues impeding the holding of national elections.

The recommendations included holding presidential and legislative elections within two years, ensuring the independence of the High National Elections Commission, and forming a new executive government with a clear political agreement and a specific timeframe.

It also recommended adopting a permanent constitution before the elections, activating the national dialogue mechanism to replace the current political bodies with an elected constituent assembly, and implementing institutional and legislative reforms, including restructuring the commission, granting it financial independence, and amending laws to ensure their implementation. It also called for imposing restrictions on the interim government to prevent long-term commitments, adopting a national code of political conduct, establishing an independent election monitoring body, and establishing a national arbitration mechanism to resolve disputes early.
