The spread of locusts in the western region of Libya.
Pulbished on:Tripoli, June 16, 2025 (LANA) – Hussein Al-Breiki, the media spokesman for the National Committee for Desert Locust Control and its technical advisor, revealed that large swarms of locusts were recorded last week in the areas of Abu Zayan, Gharyan, and Wadi Ghan in the Western Mountains. Some swarms also moved to Abu Shaiba and Al-Azizia in the interior of the mountain, and reached Tiji and Nalot, as well as the Wazen area in the far northwest.
Al-Breiki said in press statements broadcast by Libya Al-Ahrar TV that locusts are also present in large quantities in Wadi Tininai, south of Bani Walid, and parts of the Hamada area. He noted that control operations conducted over the past few days have been very limited due to the limited resources available. He explained that two teams with very limited equipment will be sent to the Al-Wafa field in Hamada and the Abu Shaiba area in the interior of the mountain to confront these swarms. Al-Buraiki warned that the situation still poses a significant threat to the country, noting the presence of unlimited quantities of locusts in most agricultural areas in the south, where limited resources prevent access.
He emphasized, however, that the committee will continue its control efforts, calling on the relevant authorities in the Government of National Unity to allocate the necessary budget to enhance these efforts and save agricultural crops in all affected areas.
