UN says 138 million children work in dangerous conditions.

New York, June 12, 2025 (LANA) - The United Nations announced that nearly 138 million children were working in the world's fields and factories in 2024 under harsh and dangerous conditions, warning that eliminating child labor could take hundreds of years given the slow progress recorded.

"The deadline is over, but child labor is not over," UNICEF and the International Labor Organization wrote in a joint report. Last year, 137.6 million children between the ages of 5 and 17 were working, representing approximately 7.8% of all children in that age group, according to data published every four years.

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said that significant progress has been made in reducing the number of children forced into child labor, but too many are still toiling in mines, factories, and fields, often performing hazardous work to survive.

ILO Director-General Gilbert Houngbo said, "We must not lose sight of the fact that we still have a long way to go before we achieve our goal of eliminating child labor."

The joint report indicated that nearly 40% of the 138 million children in child labor in 2024 were engaged in highly hazardous work likely to jeopardize their health, safety, or development. Progress among younger children is also very slow. Last year, nearly 80 million children between the ages of 5 and 11 were working, representing 8.2% of all children in that age group.
