Khoury meets with representatives of the residents of Souq Al-Jumaa

Tripoli, May 31, 2025 (LANA) – The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya (DSRSG), Stephanie Khoury, met on Thursday with representatives of the people of Souq al-Juma, including members of the Souq al-Juma Social Council and the four sub-districts, its seven municipal councils, the Movement for Change for Libya, the Libyan National Council for Civil Liberties and Human Rights, the National Anti-Corruption Authority, civil society organizations, and local community representatives.
The UN mission reported in a statement that part of the meeting focused on the recent clashes in Tripoli and their impact on the safety of civilians, the damage to infrastructure, and the disruption of public services.
The mission added that the attendees emphasized the urgent need to avoid further fighting and de-escalate the situation. They also expressed concern about the continued military buildup, including by forces from outside Tripoli.
For her part, Khoury reviewed the mission's efforts with the Libyan parties to support the consolidation of the truce and stressed the need to establish security arrangements, including the withdrawal of military forces to their barracks and outside urban centers.
According to the mission, the meeting participants emphasized the need to combat corruption and protect their right to peaceful protest and freedom of expression. They welcomed the options proposed by the Advisory Committee for developing a political roadmap, emphasizing the need to address the political issues that fuel conflict and division.
The mission noted that at the conclusion of the meeting, it was agreed to continue consultations.
