New York, May 30, 2025 (LANA) - The UN Security Council announced yesterday, Thursday, the extension of the mandate granted to member states to inspect vessels suspected of violating the arms embargo imposed on Libya.

Resolution 2780, adopted by 13 votes in favor, with Russia and China abstaining, extends the mandate for six months for member states or regional organizations, such as the European Union's Operation Irini, to inspect vessels in international waters bound for or from Libya if there are reasonable grounds to suspect the transfer of arms or related materials in violation of the embargo.

The draft resolution provides for a six-month extension of the mandate, allowing UN member states, either nationally or through regional organizations, to continue carrying out inspections of vessels bound for or arriving from Libya if there are reasonable grounds to suspect them of violating the UN arms embargo imposed since 2011.

The Security Council imposed sanctions, including an arms embargo, on Libya in 2011. In 2016, Resolution 2292, adopted by the Council, authorized the inspection of vessels to ensure compliance with the embargo.
