Notables and dignitaries of the Western Region affirm their support for the truce.

Tripoli, May 30, 2025 (LANA) – Sixteen notables and dignitaries from the western region stressed, during a meeting held on Wednesday with the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), the need to establish effective mechanisms to prevent any unilateral military movements and ensure the implementation of the truce agreement concluded following the recent clashes in the capital, Tripoli. This will contribute to consolidating calm and enhancing stability in the country.

The meeting, held in Tripoli, was attended by the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya (UNSMIL), Stephanie Khoury, along with a number of community leaders and mediators from various areas of the western region, including Greater Tripoli, Souq al-Juma, Tajoura, Zawiya, Zintan, Misrata, Gharyan, Zliten, Jadu, Zuwara, Warshafana, Bani Walid, and Abu Salim.

The meeting addressed the participants' assessment of the current security situation and discussed ways to enhance the role of notables in maintaining the truce, supporting the de-escalation process, and achieving lasting stability in Libya.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the dignitaries and notables emphasized the need to combat misinformation within their communities and educate youth about the dangers of engaging in armed conflict. They also called on the United Nations mission to continue its mediation and conflict prevention efforts, expressing their full support for the Truce Committee.

The participants issued a statement calling for a permanent ceasefire, the protection of civilians and their property, and security sector reform to ensure respect for the rule of law and human rights principles. They emphasized the responsibility of all parties to strictly adhere to the terms of the Truce Agreement.
