Misrata, May 23, 2025 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) explained that the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Hannah Tetteh, and her Deputy for Political Affairs, Stephanie Khoury, visited Misrata yesterday, Thursday, and met with Mayor Mahmoud Al-Suqatri, officials from the Municipal Council, civil society and youth representatives, and the Commander of the Central Military Zone, Major General Mohammed Musa. This visit comes within the framework of its public consultations on the options proposed by the Advisory Committee.
According to what was published by the Mission, the participants in the meetings exchanged views on the options recommended by the Advisory Committee, stressing the need to learn from previous experiences and include guarantees to ensure the implementation of any political agreement, in addition to the support of the Security Council.
They also expressed their deep frustration and concern about the current situation in the country, pointing to the recent clashes in Tripoli, the continued fragmentation of state institutions, rampant corruption, the proliferation of weapons, the indefinite postponement of national elections, and the lack of progress towards lasting stability.
In a separate meeting, a group of young people spoke about the challenges they face in engaging in decision-making at the local and national levels, including in the political sphere.
The Special Representative of the Secretary-General affirmed the Mission's commitment to consulting with Libyans on a roadmap leading to national elections and the formation of a single government, emphasizing the importance of the voice of the Libyan people in building a strong, unified, and sovereign state.
Tetiya noted the positive role played by the elders and notables of Misrata in calming tensions during the recent events in Tripoli, reiterating the Mission's commitment to supporting efforts to consolidate the truce.
