Tripoli, May 23, 2025 (LANA) – The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Hannah Tetteh, emphasized that the right to demonstrate is a fundamental human right.

In a television interview with Al-Hadath TV channel on Thursday night, Tetteh said, "We continue to emphasize that the right to demonstrate is a fundamental human right. It should be available to all citizens if they are dissatisfied with the way things are being conducted. They should not be met with violence if violence does not occur during demonstrations. Even in the event of unrest, any response must be proportionate and aimed at protecting lives and property."

Tetteh noted in the interview, excerpts of which were published by the mission, that the mission supported the Presidential Council in establishing a truce committee to prevent the escalation of the conflict between armed parties, to communicate with them, and to emphasize the need to respect the right to protest in the event of a civilian demonstration.
