Tripoli, May 23, 2025 (LANA) - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya, Hanna Tetteh, affirmed that the international community continues to recognize the Government of National Unity, despite the expiration of its original mandate and the protests and opposition it faces in some areas.

This came in a televised interview with Al-Hadath TV channel on Thursday, which the mission published on its official page on Friday.

"At the moment, the international community still recognizes the Government of National Unity, but we recognize that this government is facing protests and opposition, especially in western Libya and within Tripoli," Tetteh said.

Tetteh stressed that any unilateral measures regarding the formation of a government would not be helpful at this stage, saying: "Continuing on this path will only lead to the division of Libya... I do not believe that unilateral measures by any party will be helpful at this time."

She emphasized that the solution lies in consensus, noting the importance of launching a process of consultations between the various parties: "If we want a solution that unites, not divides, I believe it is important to launch a process of consultations, reach consensus, and agree on a way forward."
