Tripoli, May 23, 2025 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), in cooperation with the Libyan Mine Action Centre (LMAC), conducted a field awareness campaign on the dangers of unexploded ordnance (UXO). This campaign is part of the urgent response plan to the repercussions of the recent clashes in the capital, Tripoli.

The mission explained, in a post on its official page on Friday, that its awareness teams and the LMAC conducted a field visit to the Ghout al-Shaal area on May 22, one of 14 areas affected by remnants of war and unexploded ordnance in the city.

The campaign included distributing awareness materials to citizens, organizing direct meetings with local residents, including women and children, and posting awareness messages on public safety in vital areas and on building walls, with the aim of raising awareness of the dangers of UXO and ways to prevent them.

The mission noted that similar activities have been implemented in six other affected areas since the campaign was launched on May 19, reaching a total of 5,162 beneficiaries so far, including 359 children and 327 women.

The mission also confirmed that the response plan also includes field operations to remove unexploded ordnance, based on reports received from citizens and security forces, which are received through hotlines operated by the mission's field partners.

These efforts are part of supporting stabilization efforts and enhancing the protection of civilians, given the continued threat posed by unexploded ordnance to the lives of residents and its disruption of daily life in the affected areas.
