Benghazi, May 22, 2025 (LANA) - The National Center for Disability Research and the National Council for Civil Liberties and Human Rights signed a joint cooperation agreement today, Thursday, in Benghazi, aimed at supporting and promoting the rights of persons with disabilities and their integration into society, in line with international standards.
Counselor and official spokesperson for the Council, Idris Al-Ghazali, confirmed to the Libyan News newspaper that the agreement embodies a strategic vision that places persons with disabilities among public policy priorities, noting that their percentage ranges between 12 and 16 percent of Libya's population.
He explained that community awareness is one of the most prominent provisions of the agreement, as it is an essential step towards breaking stereotypes about disability and promoting the integration of this group as an active part of the social fabric. He noted that a specialized committee is working to develop Law No. (5) on the rights of persons with disabilities.
For her part, Aya Salem Al-Aqouri, Director of the International Cooperation Office at the National Center for Disability Research, explained that the memorandum of understanding falls within the center's mandate to support scientific cooperation with national and international institutions. She emphasized that areas of cooperation include conducting joint research, organizing scientific seminars and conferences, and exchanging expertise in training and reform, contributing to the development of a unified and comprehensive national vision for the rights of persons with disabilities.
