Tripoli, May 19, 2025 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) affirmed that maintaining the ceasefire and ensuring stability in the capital, Tripoli, are the cornerstone of protecting civilians and ensuring the uninterrupted provision of public services.
This came in a tweet posted by the mission on its official Facebook page, following a meeting held Sunday evening in Tripoli by the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya, Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Libya, Ines Choma, with a number of local authorities, with the participation of representatives from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS).
The meetings included the Municipal Council, the Libyan Red Crescent Society, and the Emergency Medicine and Support Center, where the UN delegation received live briefings on the latest developments and discussed the challenges facing these institutions in light of the current security and humanitarian conditions.
The UN mission commended the efforts of first responders, appreciating their dedication to providing urgent medical care and saving lives in an extremely dangerous environment, as well as their role in evacuating civilians during recent armed clashes, despite the absence of official humanitarian corridors.
