Tripoli, May 18, 2025 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) announced that the Presidential Council, in its capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan Armed Forces, in cooperation with the Mission, has formed a truce committee headed by the Chief of Staff of the Libyan Army, Lieutenant General Mohamed Al-Haddad. This builds on the fragile ceasefire reached last week.

The Mission stated in a post on its official page that this committee, which held its first meeting today, Sunday, focuses on facilitating a permanent ceasefire with an emphasis on protecting all civilians and agreeing on security arrangements for the capital, Tripoli.

The Mission noted that the formation of the committee, headed by Lieutenant General Mohamed Al-Haddad, reflects a commitment by all parties to avoid further escalation and ensure compliance with their obligations under international human rights law and international humanitarian law.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) welcomed the leadership role played by the Presidency Council in this crucial matter, its commitment to de-escalating tensions and promoting peace, as well as the ongoing efforts of all parties involved in negotiating and maintaining the truce, including political, military, and social actors.

The Mission recalled the concerns expressed by the UN Security Council regarding reports of civilian casualties during the violence that erupted last week, calling for an immediate, lasting, and unconditional ceasefire, and for those responsible for such acts and for failure to comply with the truce arrangements and the requirements of international humanitarian and human rights law to be held accountable.

The Mission concluded the statement by affirming its steadfast commitment to promoting peace, stability, security, and human rights for all Libyans in Tripoli and throughout Libya.
