The UN Security Council stresses the need to hold accountable those involved in the violence in Tripoli.

New York, May 18, 2025 (LANA) – The members of the UN Security Council expressed their deep concern over the escalation of violence in the capital, Tripoli, in recent days, which has resulted in civilian casualties, according to recent reports.

In a press statement issued by the UN mission on Sunday, the Council members called on all parties in Libya to take all necessary measures to protect civilians, stressing the need to hold accountable those responsible for the attacks that targeted them. The Council members also welcomed reports of truce agreements, stressing the importance of full adherence by all parties, while emphasizing the need to reach a final, lasting ceasefire agreement.

The members of the Security Council affirmed their strong support for the comprehensive Libyan-led political process under UN auspices, with a focus on strengthening the sovereignty and unification of Libyan institutions, including military and security institutions, to contribute to the country's stability.

The Council also stressed the need for urgent progress towards achieving lasting peace in Libya and providing security and stability for the Libyan people. The members of the Council added that their support for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and the efforts of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in this regard will continue, reaffirming their full respect for Libya's sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and national unity.
