Dbaiba: We have broken the barrier of fear.

Tripoli, May 18, 2025 (LANA) - The head of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbaiba, said that the country has begun a new and decisive phase in the process of regaining its sovereignty from the grip of armed militias. He stressed that the state will no longer allow chaos to continue or for outlaw groups to control the fate of Libyans.

In a televised address on Saturday night, the prime minister added that he deliberately delayed making statements about the security situation to avoid any misinterpretation that could be used to ignite strife. He added that his government encountered a difficult reality upon assuming office, as the militias were greater in influence and reach than the state.

Dbaiba spoke about the security operation carried out in the Abu Salim area, stating that it was carried out quickly and efficiently, without any damage despite the dense population. He considered it a pivotal turning point in the imposition of state authority.

Addressing the people of Abu Salim, the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity said, "Injustice has been lifted from you, and I will support this area more than ever."

He explained that the government issued several important decisions immediately after the operation, most notably the appointment of a new, highly qualified head of the Internal Security Service, guarantees that no injustice or abuses would be tolerated, and the dissolution of the Immigration Service.

The Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity acknowledged the haste with which some measures were implemented following the operation, describing what happened the next day as a "shared mistake" that was immediately corrected.

The Prime Minister believed that fear had been broken and that the time had come to stop defending extortionists and criminals. He called on all members of the militias to join state institutions and secure their rights through the law, not through violence or extortion.

Dbaiba also emphasized that the government welcomes any party that supports the state's project, but will not tolerate those who continue to corrupt and undermine security.

He said that anyone seeking to sow discord between him and the people of Souq al-Juma or other areas will not succeed, noting that since assuming office, he has raised the slogan "No war between Libyans."

Dbaiba accused political parties of seeking to keep the capital, Tripoli, at the mercy of militias, allowing them to use them as a tool to achieve their own interests. He added that these parties exploited the security tensions that followed the Abu Salim operation to promote what he described as a coup plot.

Regarding the demonstrations that took place in Tripoli, the Prime Minister said that some of them were genuine and expressed legitimate demands, while a large portion were funded to influence public opinion. However, he chose to remain patient and withstand the pressure out of respect for the Libyan street.

The Prime Minister emphasized that he has received broad support from the international community, which "wants a stable Libya," noting that numerous delegations had recently visited him and expressed their support for the steps taken by the government to end the militias' power. Dbaiba concluded his remarks by emphasizing that Libyans are beginning to see "a real glimmer of hope at the end of this dark period and the beginning of a state of law and institutions."
