Tripoli, May 16, 2025 (LANA) - The US Embassy in Libya announced its support for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) in calling on all parties in Tripoli to exercise restraint and avoid escalation.

In a post on the X platform, the embassy called for ensuring the protection of civilians from harm and respecting the ceasefire.

UNSMIL had affirmed citizens' right to peaceful protest, referring to calls for demonstrations in the capital, Tripoli, on Friday.

In a statement, the mission warned against any escalation of violence, reminding all parties of their obligations to protect civilians.

The UN mission stated that the use of violence against peaceful demonstrators constitutes a serious violation of human rights and may amount to crimes punishable under international law.
