Tripoli, May 16, 2025 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) reiterated the importance of expediting the investigation conducted by the Libyan Attorney General into the disappearance of House of Representatives member Ibrahim Al-Darsi and his alleged torture. This follows the International Criminal Court's briefing to the Security Council on the authenticity of the video depicting Al-Darsi chained and showing signs of torture.

The mission said in a statement on Friday that, now that the authenticity of the recording is no longer in doubt, the mission urges the Libyan authorities to fully cooperate with the Attorney General and provide all necessary support to ensure a prompt, transparent, and independent investigation. It noted that Al-Darsi's family, colleagues, and all Libyans are demanding to know his whereabouts and fate.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) also reiterated its call for prompt, transparent, and impartial investigations into all cases of gross human rights violations, including enforced disappearances, arbitrary detention, torture, and deaths in custody, throughout Libya, reminding perpetrators that these acts may constitute international crimes punishable by the International Criminal Court, an independent judicial body.

At the end of its statement, the Mission affirmed its readiness to provide all possible support to these investigations and unequivocally emphasized the imperative of ending impunity for these heinous crimes, and that all perpetrators must be held accountable in accordance with Libyan and international law.
