Tripoli, May 16, 2024 (LANA) - Taher Al-Sunni, Libya's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, stressed that the Libyan people are tired of piecemeal solutions and fragile transitional phases that have failed over the years. He called for the acceleration of elections as a fundamental step to ending these phases and achieving a comprehensive political transition.
This came in his address to the Security Council during the session devoted to hearing a briefing by the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court on the situation in Libya.
El-Sunni expressed his regret over the recent events in Tripoli, which he described as a direct result of the absence of comprehensive political solutions. He emphasized that Libya faces major security and economic challenges that require effective action from the international community.
The Permanent Representative of Libya to the United Nations also emphasized the Libyan people's rejection of the ongoing transitional phases, criticizing foreign interventions that have contributed to fueling divisions, and holding the Security Council responsible for the current situation. He emphasized that the real solution lies in supporting the Libyan national will, away from temporary solutions.
Regarding Libya's cooperation with the International Criminal Court, Al-Sunni emphasized the importance of continuing this cooperation while respecting Libyan sovereignty. He emphasized the need to prosecute crimes committed on Libyan soil through national courts, and called for the extradition of those wanted by the Libyan judiciary.
Al-Sunni concluded his remarks by emphasizing that achieving justice in Libya must be part of a comprehensive national project, with the need for international cooperation based on mutual respect for Libyan sovereignty.
