Tripoli, May 14, 2025 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) confirmed this morning, Wednesday, that it is in continuous contact with the relevant parties on the ground and with international partners to contain the situation and stop the fighting in the capital, Tripoli.
In a statement, the mission reiterated its full support for mediation and tension-reduction efforts, in light of the rapid escalation of violence in the capital, Tripoli, and the mobilization of forces in other parts of the country.
The mission expressed its strong condemnation of this escalation, warning that the situation could quickly spiral out of control if immediate steps are not taken to contain it and ensure de-escalation.
The mission expressed its deep concern over reports of civilian casualties and stressed the need for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in all areas, allowing safe corridors to be opened for the evacuation of civilians trapped in areas of intense conflict.
The mission also called on all parties to respect international humanitarian law, ensure the protection of civilians, and engage in serious and good-faith dialogue to resolve disputes through peaceful means.
She pointed out that targeting civilians or endangering their lives, along with attacks on civilian infrastructure, may constitute crimes under international law, and those responsible will be held accountable.
