Tripoli, 8 May 2025 (Lana): UNSMIL emphasized that the freedom of opinion and expression is a cornerstone for human rights and for building free and democratic societies.

The mission stressed the need to distinguish between legitimate freedom of expression and incitement to discrimination, hostility, or violence, which is prohibited under local laws, international legislation, societal norms, and established religious values.

The UNSMIL stated that combating hate speech does not mean imposing restrictions on freedom of expression but rather aims to prevent such speech from becoming a tool that threatens the safety of individuals and the stability of societies.

The mission called on all parties to commit to constructive dialogue, promote a culture of tolerance, and work together to create a media and societal environment that respects diversity and protects human dignity.
