Widespread anticipation in Libya for the Advisory Committee's recommendations on the electoral framework.

Pulbished on:

Tripoli, May 5, 2025 (LANA) - Libyans and the political community in Libya are eagerly awaiting the release of the final report of the advisory committee formed by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), amidst widespread anticipation of a real breakthrough in the faltering political process.

The anticipated report represents a pivotal milestone in the path of international and local efforts, as it is expected to advance the political process toward stability, end the state of division, and restore state institutions to their unified role, thus fulfilling Libyans' aspirations for a stable and secure future.

The committee has formulated a set of final options and recommendations aimed at addressing legal and institutional divisions and paving the way for the organization of inclusive national elections.

The final report of these recommendations is currently being prepared and revised and will be published in the coming days, in line with the principle of transparency adopted by UNSMIL.

The mission announced that it will evaluate the options presented in the advisory report and initiate a series of consultations with the Libyan parties, with the broadest participation from various segments of the Libyan population, with the aim of charting a political roadmap based on consensus and leading to credible elections.

The committee concluded its work last Thursday, following a series of intensive deliberations, during which it reached a set of options and recommendations aimed at addressing the contentious issues within the Libyan electoral framework.

The advisory committee consists of 20 prominent Libyan figures, selected for their expertise in the fields of law, constitution, and elections.

The committee was formed on February 4, 2025, pursuant to paragraphs 2 and 5 of UN Security Council Resolution 2755 (2024), as part of supporting UN efforts to find a consensus platform to end the political stalemate.

Over the course of three months, the committee held more than twenty working sessions in Tripoli and Benghazi. It also conducted comprehensive consultations with the "6+6" committee, responsible for drafting the electoral laws adopted in 2023, as well as with the High National Elections Commission, to ensure that all relevant technical and political aspects were covered.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) commended the efforts of the Advisory Committee and commended its members' commitment, professionalism, and integrity. It noted that the recommendations represent a vital contribution to achieving a comprehensive political settlement, unifying institutions, and ending the repeated transitional phases that have burdened the country for more than 14 years.
