Benghazi, May 4, 2025 (LANA) - First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Fawzi al-Nuwairi, emphasized the pivotal role the House plays in supporting the Palestinian cause through legislation and laws.
This came in his speech, delivered on behalf of the Libyan House of Representatives delegation during the 38th Conference of the Arab Parliamentary Union, held in the Algerian capital.
In his speech, al-Nuwairi pointed out that the Arab nation is undergoing a critical phase and a fateful turning point, amid accelerating regional and international transformations and unprecedented challenges. This places a historic responsibility on Arab parliamentarians, requiring them to intensify efforts and strengthen joint Arab action to serve the interests of their peoples and their aspirations for stability and development.
He added that the region is witnessing exceptional circumstances, in which political, economic, and security crises are intertwined, and foreign interventions are increasing, threatening the security and stability of Arab countries. This makes a unified Arab position a necessity, not an option.
Al-Nuwairi explained that the Arab Parliamentary Union represents a unified platform and a unified voice capable of influencing and formulating effective actions that express the will of the Arab peoples and support the nation's causes, foremost among them the Palestinian cause, which remains the focus of the Arab conflict and the central issue that cannot be postponed or retreated from.
He emphasized that the Palestinian cause is not merely a political or humanitarian issue, but rather a matter of identity, dignity, and existence that tests the sincerity of national and religious commitment and exposes the gap between words and actions. He pointed out that the blatant aggression, forced displacement, settlement expansion, and systematic violations to which the Palestinian people are subjected constitute an existential threat, a challenge to international legitimacy, and a threat to Arab national security.
Al-Nuwairi emphasized the necessity of this conference being a launching pad for a unified Arab strategy that supports the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the establishment of an independent state on all of its occupied territories with Jerusalem as its capital, and the rejection of all forms of normalization with the occupation.
He also called for activating Arab parliamentary coordination and strengthening presence in international forums through unified delegations, submitting memoranda of protest, and lobbying for legislation criminalizing dealings with the Zionist entity and supporting the steadfastness of the Palestinian people.
In this context, Al-Nuwairi noted that the Libyan House of Representatives took an important step by issuing Law No. (33) of 2023, amending Law No. (62) of 1957, which criminalizes all forms of dealing with the Zionist entity and prohibits entry into state lands and facilities by any entity affiliated with it.
At the end of his speech, Al-Nuwairi emphasized that the responsibility of Arab parliamentarians requires them to rise to the challenge, restore the role of the Arab Parliamentary Union in defending the nation's issues, and ensure that its outcomes contribute to building a future worthy of the aspirations of the people. He emphasized that the Palestinian cause is not a passing issue, but rather a reflection of the nation's conscience and a test of the sincerity of national belonging.
He called for an honest stand to review Arab positions and formulate a collective parliamentary action plan to confront the systematic attack on Palestine and restore rights to their rightful owners.
It is noteworthy that the House of Representatives delegation participating in the conference, headed by First Deputy Speaker Fawzi al-Nuwairi, included members of the House of Representatives: Al-Salihin Abdul Nabi, Hassan al-Barghouthi, Aisha Shalabi, in addition to the head of the House's office, Abdullah al-Masry.
