Tripoli, May 4, 2025 (LANA) - The General Syndicate of Libyan Journalists - Tripoli and the Western Region - expressed its deep concern over the increasing pressure on freedom of opinion and the press in Libya, and the threats faced by Libyan journalists and bloggers...and all those with a dissenting opinion, through kidnapping, threats, and interrogations without regard for the laws that protect the freedom and dignity of journalists, their right to express their opinions and views, and their pursuit of information and dissemination.

This came in the closing statement of the celebration organized yesterday, Saturday, by the Journalists Syndicate on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, in the presence of Abdullah Al-Lafi, a member of the Presidential Council, the President of the Supreme Council of State and the Minister of Economy in the Government of National Unity, a representative from the Office of the Attorney General, and a large gathering of journalists from various press institutions and the independent press.

In their statement, the journalists declared their solidarity with every journalist who has been or is being threatened, intimidated, or subjected to coercive measures. They called on the competent authorities to commit to first filing a complaint against any journalist with the Syndicate, and for the Syndicate to be present through a representative in any legal summons or investigation. Anything other than that is considered null and void and in violation of the law.

The statement called on journalists to unite within their Syndicate to form a pressure group to defend the profession, its institutions, and its workers. They called on journalists in the private media, especially those working abroad, to make the homeland their ultimate goal, its unity their aim, and the culmination of their efforts and work, and its elevation their endeavor.

At the end of the statement, the journalists affirmed their solidarity with their fellow journalists everywhere and their support for a constructive and responsible media that celebrates all progress achieved by humanity and despises any call or act of violence, racism, war, injustice, and oppression.
