New York, May 3, 2024 (LANA) – Member of the House of Representatives, Rabia Abu Ras, representing the Parliamentary Network for Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (PNND), participated in the plenary session of the third session of the Preparatory Committee for the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, held in New York City. House of Representatives spokesman Abdullah Blihaq said in a press statement on Saturday that MP Abu Ras delivered a speech on behalf of the parliamentary network, stressing that the world is witnessing an alarming escalation in armed conflicts, a renewed nuclear arms race, the growing risks of nuclear weapons use, climate catastrophes, and existential threats associated with rising greenhouse gas emissions. She emphasized that parliamentarians around the world are working, through their national parliaments, to address these serious challenges.

Abu Ras called for strengthening diplomacy, dialogue, cooperative leadership, and the establishment of collective security and the rule of law as ways to prevent the outbreak of nuclear war, resolve international disputes peacefully, and protect the climate for current and future generations.

She emphasized the need to take concrete steps toward a world free of nuclear weapons, pointing to Libya's experience in voluntarily dismantling its nuclear program, with the aim of strengthening regional and international relations, particularly with countries in North Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.

The MP added that Libya, despite its voluntary initiative, has not been rewarded for this. The courageous decision was not only distorted, but also subjected to unlawful aggression and destruction. She called for supporting states that unilaterally abandon their nuclear weapons or join nuclear-weapon-free zones, and for strengthening such zones worldwide.

She concluded her speech by emphasizing the importance of strengthening the role of the UN General Assembly, the International Court of Justice, and the International Criminal Court in preventing aggression and holding accountable those responsible for violations. She called for reformulating global security priorities by adopting an approach based on dialogue, cooperation, conflict resolution, and the rule of law for a more secure and just future, according to a statement by the spokesman for the House of Representatives, Abdullah Blihaq.
