Tripoli, May 2, 2025 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) announced that the Advisory Committee it formed agreed, at the conclusion of its deliberations yesterday, Thursday, on a set of final options and recommendations to address the contentious issues within the current Libyan electoral framework.
The mission stated on its website that it will publish the recommendations and options proposed by the Advisory Committee in the coming days, in compliance with the principle of transparency. It confirmed that the final report is currently being prepared and revised.
In its statement, the mission acknowledged the difficulty of the task entrusted to the members of the Advisory Committee and the issues they addressed, praising the committee's efforts, commitment, professionalism, and integrity.
The mission emphasized that the committee's recommendations will be a useful contribution to efforts to secure a political agreement leading to national elections and paving the way for the unification of state institutions, two essential steps towards ending the country's divisions and bringing an end to the series of open-ended transitional phases.
The mission stated that it will evaluate the options presented in the report and begin consultations with relevant Libyan parties and the general public on a consensus-based political roadmap leading to elections.
The statement reiterated UNSMIL's commitment to facilitating a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process that not only includes the input of decision-makers but also takes into account the aspirations of Libyans negatively affected by the current situation. It emphasized that the time has come to put the interests of the Libyan people first.
The Advisory Commission, a group of 20 Libyan figures with expertise in legal, constitutional, and electoral issues, has held more than 20 sessions in Tripoli and Benghazi since its establishment on February 4, pursuant to paragraphs 2 and 5 of UN Security Council Resolution 2755 (2024). The Commission also held consultations with members of the "6+6" committee that drafted the current electoral laws in 2023, and with the High National Elections Commission.
