New York, May 1, 2025 (LANA) – Libya's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Taher El-Sunni, affirmed Libya's firm and supportive position on the Palestinian people's struggle to achieve their legitimate rights, foremost among them their right to resist and defend themselves against the occupation, and to establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
This came in a speech El-Sunni delivered on Wednesday evening on behalf of the Arab Group during the high-level ministerial meeting of the Security Council, devoted to discussing the item "The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue."
In his speech, El-Sunni said: "Libya will always remain a strong supporter of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them their right to resist and defend themselves against the occupation," stressing that "there can be no true peace without the Palestinians obtaining their full rights, the return of refugees, and the declaration of an independent State of Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital."
Al-Sunni condemned the ongoing Israeli violations against civilians in the Gaza Strip, noting that "Gaza has become the largest mass grave for children in modern history," with the death toll exceeding 52,000, most of them women and children, along with more than 120,000 injured, and the displacement of approximately 1.9 million Palestinians.
In a remarkable humanitarian stance, Al-Sunni addressed the Security Council session, saying, "Today you are facing a real test before your people... Silence is no longer an option. It is time for the human conscience to awaken from its slumber. It is time to take a clear position that puts an end to these violations... Stop the Gaza Holocaust, for history will record and will not be merciful."
He also reiterated Libya's full support for the Arab-Islamic plan to rebuild Gaza, praising the regional and international efforts exerted in this regard and calling for urgent international action to halt the aggression, ensure the entry of humanitarian aid, recognize the State of Palestine, and hold those responsible for war crimes accountable.
Al-Sunni, Libya's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, concluded his remarks by calling for an end to double standards and for the international community to shoulder its legal and humanitarian responsibilities. He emphasized that "Palestinian rights will remain alive, with the support of free peoples and the global conscience."
