Tripoli, April 29, 2025 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) warned of the dangers of hate speech and misinformation, which can lead to widespread and destructive discrimination, contempt, and violence.
In a statement, issued on Tuesday under the title "No to Hate Speech," the UN mission, noted that hate speech can come in various forms, stating that it has historically contributed to paving the way for horrific crimes, including "wars" and "genocide."
It noted that. the weaponization of public discourse for political gain is unfortunately not new, hate speech and misinformation can lead to widespread and destructive discrimination, contempt, and violence.
The mission urged the importance of verifying information before sharing it, noting that a post that appears to be true and innocent may in fact be part of a misinformation campaign deliberately created to harm a specific person or group. Examples of misinformation include fabricated or manipulated content, such as conspiracy theories or harmful rumors.
