Tripoli, 27 April 2025 (Lana): UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General Hanna Tetteh stressed the Libyan state to provide legal and civil protection for women to enable them to achieve their aspirations and contribute effectively to their country's development.
This came in response to a question about women's issues in Libya in an interview, part of which was published by the UNSMIL on its official page.
"Most African countries are patriarchal societies, and Libya is not an exception. Society grants privileges to men at the expense of women. Unfortunately, this is the reality we are dealing with and trying to address," Tetteh said.
"We know that sometimes when we advocate for these issues, we face resistance based on religious and cultural values, she emphasized the importance of demonstrating that women's empowerment does not come at the expense of the values society believes in, as these values are crucial to maintaining social cohesion,” she added.
Tetteh reiterated her support for and advocacy for women's issues in Libya, noting the work on a draft law to prevent violence against women, drafted with the support of the UNSMIL and submitted to the House of Representatives, expressing her hope that it would eventually be passed, as it is an important mechanism for protecting women who are vulnerable to violence and abuse.
The UN envoy stated that the passage of a law does not necessarily mean that its implementation is the prevailing practice, but rather that there is a need for legal and regulatory intervention to protect those affected.
She explained that she will continue to work with her colleagues in the UN team and Libyan civil society organizations to create more spaces and opportunities for Libyan women.
