Tripoli, 17 April 2025 (Lana) The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) announced a proposal to establish a regional coordination mechanism aimed at enhancing technical and field coordination between Libyan border security authorities and neighboring countries.
This came during the conclusion of meetings of the Joint Technical Coordination Team on Border Security, composed of security and military officers from across Libya, with the participation of DSRSG for Political Affairs, Stephanie Koury, and representatives of the Security Working Group Co-chairs of the Berlin Process.
The UNSMIL stated yesterday that during the discussions, the technical team briefed on the work of the last few months, culminating in steps taken between 14 and 16 April, notably the establishment of the Joint Communication and Information Exchange Center in Tripoli and the planning for the establishment of a similar center in Benghazi.
In addition, the technical team held meetings with representatives from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to brief them on their joint efforts in border security, irregular migration, and counterterrorism, and to discuss necessary support.
